The region in the apical meristem of a root where little or no cell division occurs. The cells in the quiescent centre are capable of assuming meristematic activity if the initials in the meristem are damaged, and thus act as a reservoir of potential initials, protected from damage by their relative inactivity. The quiescent centre may also be a site of auxin synthesis. (BRENDA Tissue and Enzyme Source Ontology, BTO_0005385)
